Six adjectives when I think about SLAM

Hi guys, and welcome back to my blog :)

This post is one of my last ones :( But I want to share with you six adjectives when I think about the book SLAM and the last weeks of english lessons.

Here are my six adjectives:

Fateful: For me fateful counts to the adjectives, when I think about this book, because it can simply happen to everybody and suddenly everybody can be in such a situation. This book is rousing.

Confusing: At the beginning I asked me, why Sam reacts like this, but the more we occupied us with the book the more it seemed to me realistic and not confusing anymore like at the beginning. Nevertheless I not always came completly along.

Frightening: I find it bad that it can go so fast. In the book Alicia is Sam's first girlfriend and they have sex for the first time and she's pregnant. I think for every girl in this age it's inconceivably to become pregnant and certainly most are afraid of this.

Interesting: I personally think it is still very interesting how somebody feels in such a situation (from both sides) and which decisions this person has to make.

Detailed: On my opinion the book is written very detailed, but so one can well imagine himself in Sam and understand his acting. But at some points I think it's written too detailed.

Comprehnsible: I can understand the reactions of the characters very well in this situation and while reading this book I was asking myself some questions like : How my parents would react? or What would I do? The whole acting of the persons is understandable and clear.

When we started with this book at school I was very sceptical first, also what concerns the blog, but finally I think it was a good project and it's sad, that we're almost at the end. :(

Hope you like it :)

Teenage pregnancies and the NYC campaign

Hi guys, and welcome back to my blog :)

Today I'll talk about this campaign from the NYC Human Resources Administration:

Nearly half of all pregnancies in the U.S are described by the women themselves as unplanned.
So I want to write a letter to the NYC Human Resources Administration:

Dear NYC Human Resources Administration,

at school our teacher showed us your campaign to teenage pregnancies, and I would never have thought that a pregnancy can have such bad results.

But after talking in class about the campain I think you're absuloutly right. Teens giving birth before they are ready to provide emotional and financial support and this isn't a good way to raise children, and it's important to send the right message, especially to young people.

This campaign makes very clear to young people that there's a lot at stake when it comes to deciding to raise a child, but a teenage pregnancy is not the worst thing in the world.

There are so many worser things in this world and here the mothers are badly shown , only because they made a mistake.

I think for this mistake they shouldn't be criticised, because only a few decide in this situation for not giving the child birth.

Sincerely, Julie.

My favorite chapter

Hi guys, and welcome back to my blog :)

We're already in chapter 15 and therefore at the end of our book :(

Let's start with a summary of chapter 13, 14 and 15.

Chapter 13:
We're back in the present, and Sam slams with his skateboard and needs to go to the hospital. His mum thinks, that he needs to stop skating, because it's better for his future with Alicia. He also finds out that his mother is pregnant.

Chapter 14:
Sam is skating when his mum runs to him to tell him, that Alicia has contractions and she'll give birth. On 12 september Rufus is born. After childbirth the two grandmothers have a discussion about the family name.

Chapter 15:
Rufus is at home and Sam goes to Alicia, he lives now with her. But his mum isn't entirely happy with it.

Now my favorite chapter:

I've decided to choose chapter n°9 as my fovorite chapter.
Chapter 9 deals with Sam's fear of his following life with the baby and the publication from Alicia's pregnancy in both families.

Alicia is prgnant and hasn't yet told anyone. She wants to keep the baby and decides to tell the parents the next day. The reactions of the adults are very similar. They are disappointed, sad and angry. In the end they understand that it is very important to stick together as close as possible in this situation. Nevertheless Alicia wants to leave the parental home and Sam realizes that he has to be responsible even if he does not like to.

Sam don't know how to handle with this situation and how he could help Alicia. This chapter is my favorite one because I think it's intresting to read about the feelings of Alicia and Sam and the reaction of the parents in this situation.

Quotes:
"Do you want to know the results of the pregnancy test?" (p.123, line 29)
"I think I can guess" (p. 124, line 1)

"Do your mum and dad want to kill me?" (p. 124, line 11)
"God, I haven't told them", she said. "I was hoping you'd do that with me." (p. 124, line 13)

"Can you do me favour?" she said. "When we talk about this, can you say "we"?" (p.124, line 29/30)

"But what are we going to do wizh a baby?" (p, 126, line 14)
"What are we going to do with it? Look after it. What else can you do with it?"(p, 126, line 15/16)

"Will Alicia's mum and dad actually attempt to attack me? Physically? It wasn't only my fault." (p. 135, line 20/21)

"Do you hate us?" said her mum suddenly. (p. 139, line 31)

"Thirty-two. So she was sixteen when you were born" (...) "Don't you people ever learn anything?"
(p.141, line 21/23)

"Of all the things you could do. All the ways you could hurt me." (p. 144, line 4/5)

In the end a few questions I would like to ask the author Nick Hornby:

(The author of slam: Nick Hornby)

How has he come on this story?
Has he gained own experiences with this topic?
Is there an altanative end?
Is there an continuation?
Where does he knows so many details from?
Why does TH and skating plays such a big role?

Hope you like it :)

My favorite character

Hi guys, and welcome back to my blog :)

Today I'll talk a bit about the main character Sam, who's my favorite character at the same time.

SAM:

(For me Sam looks like that)

Sam is the protagonist of this book and the book is written from his perspective. From his actions until now, he seems to behave like any other teenage boy at his age. It’s clear that he’s insecure about his feelings and about himself, because it seems like he doesn’t really know what he wants in his life. For example, he felt in love with a girl and he was convinced that those strong feelings would last forever, but after a while he proved himself the opposite. He explained that his feelings for Alicia were just suddenly gone and that seemed to be really unrealistic. Although, Sam tried to convince himself that there wasn’t a real reason to break up with Alicia, it didn’t seem to be real. It’s unbelievable that he loved and adored her at one moment and then the next second she appeared to be boring to him. But his insecurity can be understandable in a way, because Alicia was probably his first real girlfriend and all those feelings were unfamiliar to him. That was probably the reason why he became unsure about his feelings.
Alicia didn’t even seem to be the kind of girl that would be interested to date a boy like Sam, because her personality seemed to be too different from Sam’s. For example, she appears to be very outgoing and confident, meanwhile Sam seems to be more of a shy and inward type. Even though Alicia isn’t as well described as Sam, it’s possible to guess that she is more experienced when it comes to dating.Sam is very friendly, calm and talented, but he's just overtaxed. He has got sex with his girlfriend Alicia for the first time and now he's becaming father. He doesn't know the right decisions and everything seems to be too much.

My favorite character of the book "Slam" is Sam, because he does what he wants, stays strong and helps Alica when he finds out that she's pregnant. But I don't like to be one of the characters of the book, because all of the main characters have so many problems that I don't want to deal with. I mean if I, for example, was Sam then I would have problems in form of the baby, my girlfriend, my family, my future, school, the parents of Alica and many other things. Basically I think that the whole situation in the book is very complicated.

Hope you like it :)

Chapter 6

Hi guys, and welcome back to my blog :)

My class and I are meanwhile in chapter 9. We might choose between different tasks and I decided this one:
Chapter 6: Explain: What does Sam's dream-future look like? Is it a nice dream, a realistic dream or a nightmare.

Sam can't remember going to bed or falling asleep, the only thing he remember is waking up the middle of the night. Next to him is Alicia and a baby was crying.

"I felt sick with shock, and I coldn't speak for a little while" (page 81 line 29/30)
Sam is shocked that this baby is his baby and he after seeing the bedroom of Alicia the shock is bigger than before. The room has changed, there is a double bed inside and he can see "...the horrible pink and blue animal alphabet" (page 82 line 32) on the wall.
He is really scared about the future and doesn't want that this is real. "Aaaagh! I don't want a baby yet!" (page 88 line 1)
He know that he did a big mistake and he want to change it, but he can't... "And if it was my life thet I'd seen, well, I didn't want to love it." (page 99 line 23/24)

I think for him this dream was a nightmare, bacause he is really overtaxed with the whole situation and don't know what to do now...

Summary

Hi guys, and welcome back to my blog :)

I want to tell you what we knew so far about our book "Slam", and what we've done.

First we create this blog, and I think it was a good idea, because it's something different like always listening to our teacher or doing some tasks on a paper.
In every english lesson we get a new task about the next chapter and we've one week to post this task in our blog.

The chapter I liked most so far was chapter 2 and the task I liked was the one to chapter 3 and 4, because we had to analyze the characters and to find a answer to the question also in the text before.

All in all my opinion is, that writing a blog is intresting, and I really like this form to analyze a book. Good is also, that there is no "good", "bad", "right" or "wrong" opinion, bacause everyone see it on his own view and see always something different then the others.

That was my summary so far...

Chapter 3 and 4

Hi guys, and welcome back to my blog :)

I'm going to write something about a quote of chapter 3
"I wouldn't be so scared of her, then." (p. 56, line 22)

That sentence is from Sam's mother and seems interesting to me. It sounds a bit, that his mum is scared of Alica, but why? She's his son new girlfriend and normaly a mother is happy about that. So what is her problem with Alicia?

I'll summarize chapter 3 and 4 so maybe we'll know why she said something like that.

Chapter 3:

Sam and Alicia are now offical together . They do everything together, like going to the cinema or go outside. They love each other, but it seems, that Sam's mum isn't very happy about her son's relationship. She asks Sam if he had already sex with Alicia, but he doesn't know what he could answer. It's a bit strange, when your mum wants to know something like that, but what she's thinking about?

Chapter 4:

Between Sam and Alicia it's not so wonderful like at the beginning. It semms like he's a bit annoyed of the relationship and he starts living his life normaly, that means like befor he knew Alicia. He also thinks about breaking up with Alicia, but she still belives in their relationship.

So here is my theory, why Sam's mum is thinking, that the relationship between her son and Alicia isn't good:

Maybe she's scared that the couple does the same mistake like Sam's mum and they get a baby together with 16. But maybe she's just sad that his little boy is growing up now and lives his own life some parts without his mother ("My mum was worried about things changing, me becoming part of someone else's life and someone else's family, me growing up and not being her little boy anymore, me becoming someone else..." (p.56, line 24-28))

So that was something about chapter 3 and 4. A text about chapter 2 is coming soon.

Hope you like it :)

Openig Chapter 1 - SAM

(This is what our book looks like)

Welcome back guys :)

The first chapter is written from the ego-perspektive. The narrator (Sam) talks about himself.
You cannot find out in which country the story took place and when, but it's in an english-speaking country. (But ut's not in the US. (page 13 line 26: "...that sounds a bit American to me"))

Sam is almost 16 years old and lives with his mum. His mum and his dad are divorced and they fight. His mum hasn't got much time for him and talks not very often with him about his problems. Sam loves to skate and is good in art and design. He hates physics and maths.
Since a few weeks he knows Alicia and they had already four dates and he's already into her. (page 14 line 10/11) His mum brought him a poster of his idol Tony Hawk, a famous skateboarder, that he hung out in his room. He talks to him every evening about news in his life, or about his mum or Alicia.
Sam is very active in sports, ambitious and talented in art.
